Citrus honey in combination with other fruit yields 25% of total Greek honey. Citrus fruits (orange, lemon) are an important source from which bees collect nectar for honey production. Citrus fruits are mainly grown in Epirus, Peloponnese, Crete and islands and consequently citrus honey is mainly produced in the Greek islands (Chania, Poros etc.), in the Peloponnese and in Epirus. There the bees collect the orange nectar from which they produce a fine honey with particularly good organic taking characteristics. The citrus and mainly orange honey has a strong, wonderful aroma, a very special and refreshing taste and a light, bright yellow color. Its crystallization time usually ranges from one to three months therefore to maintain the nutritional value of this type of honey, it should be consumed shortly and protected from high temperatures.

Citrus honey is also called beauty honey for its excellent cosmetic properties. Particularly honey from orange blossoms is known for its cosmetic properties and for its anxiolytic and soothing action. It also reduces stress, heals gastritis, helps treat migraine and helps to cure anemia as it enhances the body’s absorption of iron. In addition, orange blossom honey has a special antioxidant effect due to the vitamin C it contains and is anticonvulsant thanks to the multitude of vitamins it contains. The high nutritional value of this honey is directly related to its rich content in trace elements and amino acids. Scientific research has shown that the trace elements contained in citrus honey have a high antiseptic effect, help with inflammation, cough and gout. In addition, citrus honey has the highest zinc content compared to other honeys and is rich in citridin, a flavonate glycosidin , which has a strong antioxidant effect. Finally, it has sweating properties and encourages blood circulation.
